ATS Readability Test

Hiring software (an ATS) reads your resume before a human does. It reads the text, not the layout: columns, tables and text boxes can erase part of your background without you knowing.

Upload your resume: you get the share the bot reads, the fixes that get you past 90% and the raw text it sees. Free, no account; your file is deleted as soon as the analysis is done.

Sample result · Daniel Côté's fictional resume

The bot reads 62% of your resume correctly.

Three fixes would be enough to get above 90%: 62%, then 77%, 85% and 91%.

  1. Move your skills out of the side column. +15 → 77%

The bot doesn't read the left column: as far as it's concerned, your 12 skills and your languages don't exist. Put them in the main column, under a “Skills” heading.

  2. Write your dates in full. +8 → 85%

“2019 – pres.” isn't recognized: your current job has no duration. Write “March 2019 – present” everywhere, with the month.

  3. Add your target job title under your name. +6 → 91%

No job title at the top of the resume: the bot doesn't know what to compare with the posting. One line is enough: “Logistics Coordinator.”

What it read

  • Contact details read without errors.
  • 4 of 5 jobs recognized, with employer and title.
  • Profile and education found.

What it lost

  • Skills and languages: in a side column, invisible.
  • Dates: “2019 – pres.” isn't recognized.
  • Title: no target job title at the top of the resume.
  • Forklift operator, 2010 – 2012: in a text box, ignored. Optional.

The fixing happens in the app.

Your resume rebuilt in one column, the three fixes applied, nothing made up. You review it before using it. Included in the 7-day trial.

Fictional persona: Daniel Côté, logistics coordinator in Laval. Sample data.

Method

How we test.

We read your file the way the most common hiring software does: the raw text first, then the sections, dates and job titles. The percentage is the share of your content that arrives intact, in the right field. It judges neither your background nor your spelling.

The six checks of the readability test
We checkWhat a screening bot doesWhat often gets lost
Raw textIt extracts the text from the PDF or DOCX, without the layout.Text drawn as an image, icons that replace words.
Columns and boxesIt reads from one block to the next, often out of order, sometimes not at all.An entire side column, a text box, a table.
SectionsIt looks for familiar headings: Experience, Education, Skills.Made-up headings (“My journey”), a section with no heading.
DatesIt places each job on a timeline and calculates durations.Abbreviations (“pres.”), years on their own and out of order.
Target titleIt compares your title with the one in the posting. No job title under the name.
Contact detailsIt fills in the name, city, phone and email.Contact details placed in the document's header or footer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ATS test really free?

Yes: 5 tests a day, no account. Fixing your resume, though, happens in the app, included in the 7-day trial.

Do you keep my resume?

No. It's read for the time of the analysis, in a temporary folder deleted right away. Without an account, we keep nothing of it.

Does the test read resumes in English?

Yes. It reads resumes in French as well as in English, and flags a bilingual resume that's poorly split.

Does hiring software reject my resume on its own?

Not always. A lot of software ranks and filters applications before a human looks at them. A poorly read resume reaches the recruiter incomplete, or lower down the list.

Should I aim for 100%?

No. Above 90%, readability is no longer the problem: what matters is what your resume says for the job you're targeting. That's where the app helps you, posting by posting.
